The Yellowstone Supervolcano, which lies beneath Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, is a time bomb that threatens to cause unprecedented destruction if it erupts again.

Formed more than 640,000 years ago, this volcano contains a massive reservoir of magma capable of unleashing an eruption more than 100 times more powerful than Krakatoa (famous for its catastrophic 1883 eruption in Indonesia).

Although no eruption of this magnitude has been recorded in human history, scientists are using artificial intelligence techniques to simulate its scenario and predict its devastating effects.

The latest research suggests that the Yellowstone eruption would begin with a massive explosion with the force of 875,000 megatons of TNT, more than 100 times the power of all the nuclear bombs dropped in history. The explosion would create a huge crater in the ground, killing an estimated 90,000 people instantly.

After the initial explosion, lava will flow up to 40 miles (64 km) around the eruption site, but it won’t be the biggest threat. Dense streams of ash, rock and burning gases will shoot out at speeds of hundreds of meters per second, destroying everything in their path.

According to experts, all cities within 50 miles (80 km) of Yellowstone, such as West Yellowstone, will be completely wiped off the map, as happened to Pompeii when Mount Vesuvius erupted in Italy.

The devastation will not be limited to the area around Yellowstone, as the eruption will send huge clouds of ash into the atmosphere, causing ash to fall over much of the United States. The eruption will be so powerful that it will affect every country on Earth for years to come.
