A recent government statistic revealed that more than 9,500 Yemenis were killed and injured in mine explosions planted by the terrorist Houthi militia in a number of governorates since the beginning of the coup.
Yemeni Minister of Legal Affairs and Human Rights, Ahmed Arman, said in a statement to the website of the Masam Project for Demining in Yemen: “The number of victims of Houthi mines since the beginning of the Houthi coup until the end of 2024 AD has reached 4,501 dead and 5,083 injured.”
He added that Taiz Governorate topped the list of the number of Houthi mine victims killed with 964, followed by Hodeidah with 835, then Al Jawf with 505, Al Bayda with 409, and Marib ranked fifth with 400.
In the list of Houthi mine victims, Taiz also topped the list with 1,321 injured, followed by Al-Jawf with 813 injured, then Marib with 778 injured, Al-Hodeidah with 586 injured, and Al-Bayda ranked fifth with 330 injured.
The Houthi militia has been involved as the sole entity in planting mines in Yemen since the beginning of the war, as government and human rights reports indicate that the militia has planted more than 2 million mines in large areas of the country.
The United Nations classifies Yemen as one of the most heavily contaminated landmine hotspots in the world, and according to a previous report by the United Nations Office for Project Services, Yemen ranks third among the countries most affected by landmines and explosive remnants of war.
