The United Nations announced an escalation in food insecurity in Yemen during last November, with expectations that the situation will continue to escalate during the next two months and will get worse as the dry season approaches.

A recent international report confirmed that about half of Yemen's population will suffer from food insecurity during the coming year, due to the ongoing conflict, displacement, the collapse of the local currency, and the deterioration of purchasing power.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) confirmed that the local currency in areas under the control of the Yemeni government lost 25% of its value during the past month.

The Public Prosecution Office in the interim capital, Aden (southern Yemen), closed dozens of violating exchange shops as part of measures to curb the unprecedented collapse of the national currency, while the Prime Minister stressed the need to intensify the campaign in all liberated governorates.

Zinjibar, the capital of Abyan Governorate (southern Yemen), witnessed an angry mass march this Monday morning, coinciding with the continuation of civil disobedience by shops in protest against the deterioration of the currency and the rise in prices.

Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, Salem Al-Wali, threatened to take all legal measures against banks, companies and exchange offices that violate and do not provide their documents and data to the ministry.
