International report: The average value of the food basket in Houthi-controlled areas is about $20 more than in government-controlled areas

A recent international report revealed that the average value of the minimum food basket in areas under Houthi control is about $20 more than in areas under the control of the internationally recognized Yemeni government.

This came in the joint monthly update on the risks of the food and nutrition security crisis in Yemen for the month of October, issued yesterday, Friday, by (ACAPS, the World Bank, and the United Nations organizations, Alfao, UNICEF, the World Health Organization, and the World Food Program).

The report said that the average price of the minimum food basket in Yemen has continued to rise since January 2024, reaching its highest value ever last October.

He added that the price of the minimum food basket in areas under the control of the Yemeni government reached 130,364 Yemeni riyals (68 US dollars) in October, an increase of 25% from the same month in 2023.

In contrast, the price of the same basket in areas under Houthi control reached 46,247 Yemeni riyals ($87), an increase of 2% compared to the previous year.

This analysis highlights the difference in the cost of living between areas controlled by the government and the Houthi militia, revealing a price difference of $19 less in favor of areas controlled by the legitimate government, despite the large difference between the exchange rate of the national currency in both areas.
