When does Ramadan 2025 start? Muslims ask themselves every year and await the crescent moon in the last days of Shaaban, but astronomical calculations decide this early, as the International Astronomy Center says that March 1, 2025, will be the first day of the holy month of Ramadan.
Most Islamic countries, led by Saudi Arabia, resort to observing the Ramadan crescent with the naked eye at the end of Shaaban to announce the beginning of the fasting month. Other countries rely on astronomical calculations.
The beginning of the month of Ramadan is announced as soon as the crescent moon is sighted, as the moon disappears at the end of the lunar month, before being reborn announcing the beginning of a new lunar month.
Saudi Arabia and other Islamic countries call for sighting the crescent moon of Ramadan in the evening of the last two days of Shaaban.
The International Astronomy Center said in a statement on its website that the countries of the Islamic world will observe the crescent moon of the month of Ramadan for the year 1446 AH on Friday, February 28, 2025.
He revealed that seeing the crescent moon on that day is possible using a telescope from western Asia, most of Africa and southern Europe, and is possible with the naked eye from large parts of the two American continents.
He added that since there is a possibility of seeing the crescent moon from the Islamic world on Friday, and given that the conjunction occurs before sunset and the moon sets after sunset in all regions of the Islamic world, it is expected that most countries of the Islamic world will announce the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan on Saturday, March 1.
If Ramadan begins on this day, there will be an unusual paradox that the lunar and Gregorian months begin on the same day.
