Dutch club Feyenoord qualified for the round of 16 of the Champions League after drawing with hosts AC Milan (1-1) on Tuesday evening, benefiting from its 1-0 win in the first leg.

Mexican Santiago Jimenez gave Milan the lead after 36 seconds, before Feyenoord equalised through Argentine substitute Julian Carranza in the 73rd minute of the match, which saw the referee send off Milan player Theo Hernandez in the 51st minute.

Milan failed to reach the Champions League round of 16 for the third time in the last four seasons, while Feyenoord reached this stage (the Champions League under its new name) for the first time since the 1992-1993 season.

Feyenoord qualified for the last 16 of the continental competition for the first time since the 1974-1975 season, in the last edition in which they succeeded in winning the first and second leg matches.

Feyenoord will face either Inter Milan or Arsenal in the round of 16.
