US President Joe Biden confirmed that the terrorist Houthi militia still poses a threat to US forces, their military ships, and international shipping vessels in the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandab, and the Gulf of Aden.
This came in the letter he sent to Congress on Friday regarding the War Powers Report, which was published by the White House.
“The Houthi militants continue to pose a threat of future attacks against U.S. forces, vessels, and other maritime traffic in the region,” Biden said in his message.
“Since at least November 2023, Houthi militants based in Yemen have engaged in a series of attacks against U.S. military forces, including ships and aircraft, and against commercial shipping operating in the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandab Strait, and the Gulf of Aden,” he added.
He explained that these attacks posed "a threat to the safety of US forces, commercial vessels and their crews, regional political and economic stability, and the rights and freedoms of navigation."
He noted that in response, US forces launched separate strikes against facilities, sites and equipment in Yemen that support and facilitate Houthi militant attacks in the Red Sea region, "in a manner aimed at reducing the risk of escalation and avoiding civilian casualties."
Biden noted that these strikes protect and defend US military personnel and assets, and degrade and disrupt the ability of Houthi militants to carry out future attacks against the United States and against ships operating in the Red Sea region, which would threaten the stability of the region and threaten US strategic interests.
Biden's message concluded by stressing that the US military continues to work closely with the Yemeni government and regional partner forces to reduce the terrorist threat posed by Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and ISIS.
