The UN Security Council adopted a resolution drafted by Britain on Wednesday to extend international sanctions imposed on the Houthis for a full year.
Anadolu Agency correspondent reported that the draft resolution submitted by Britain regarding sanctions on Yemen was put to a vote in the 15-member UN Security Council.
He added that the approval to extend the sanctions came unanimously, and includes extending the duration of the sanctions imposed on Yemen, which include some financial restrictions, a travel ban on individuals, and an asset freeze until November 15, 2025.
The resolution, issued under Chapter VII of the UN Charter (which means that armed force may be used to enforce it), renewed the mandate of the Group of Experts monitoring the arms embargo on 15 November 2025.
Yemen has been subject to sanctions prohibiting arms exports since 2015, under Security Council Resolution 2216, issued against the Houthi group and forces loyal to the late President Ali Abdullah Saleh, and they are renewed annually.
Following the vote on the resolution, British Permanent Representative to the United Nations Barbara Woodward said that extending the sanctions is important to building the peace process in Yemen.
She added that the resolution sends a clear message from the UN Security Council to the Houthis, and that it is important in restricting the Houthis' attempts to destabilize Yemen.
