US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he had a phone call with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, during which they discussed several issues, including the situation in Gaza and the ongoing military operations against the Houthis in Yemen.
Trump said in a post on Truth Social that he and Sisi discussed possible solutions to the situation in Gaza and military progress against the Houthis.
The US President added that the phone call between them was very good.
For its part, the Egyptian presidency said in a statement that the two presidents discussed "ways to strengthen bilateral relations, stressing the depth and strength of the strategic relations between the two countries, and emphasizing their keenness to continue this cooperation in a way that achieves the common interests of the two peoples."
The Egyptian and American presidents discussed "developments in the Middle East and mediation efforts to restore calm to the region, which would positively impact navigation in the Red Sea and prevent economic losses for all parties," according to the statement.
In late December 2024, the Egyptian presidency announced in a statement that the Suez Canal lost approximately $7 billion in revenue during the same year due to tensions in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait, which negatively impacted shipping traffic and the sustainability of global supply chains.
In early March 2025, the first phase of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza ended, but Israel re-closed the crossings a few days later, preventing humanitarian aid from entering the Strip before resuming its war on the territory.
On March 15, Trump announced that he had ordered his country's military to launch a "major offensive" against the Houthis to end their threat to shipping, before threatening to "completely eliminate the Houthis."
