Prime Minister: Corruption in a $180 million contract at Aden refineries cost the state billions of dollars

Prime Minister Dr. Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak said that the Public Prosecution has begun investigation procedures into the Aden refineries issue, and the irregularities that occurred in a contract worth $180 million over the past nine years, and the large sums of money paid by the government from the value of this contract and its failure to implement it.

This came during a telephone intervention in the "Yemen Studio" program on Yemen TV, on Tuesday evening, during which he reviewed what had been implemented within the priorities of his work since he assumed the task of heading the government, most notably enhancing accountability and transparency and combating corruption, after receiving the results of the Central Organization for Control and Accounting's review report on the work and performance of a number of government institutions and interests.

Bin Mubarak confirmed that there is a major flaw in many contractual details regarding an important institution. If the procedures had been carried out correctly and there had been responsibility, transparency and accountability from the beginning, we would have saved the country billions of dollars that were spent on purchasing oil derivatives due to a flaw in the work of these institutions.

Yesterday, Tuesday, a responsible source in the Public Prosecution said in a statement published by the Public Prosecution’s media, “Case No. 54 of 2024 C-C, concerning the accused (M.A.A.) and the accused (H.Y.S.), was referred to the Primary Public Funds Court in Aden Governorate on charges of harming the interests of the Aden Refinery Company.

The Prime Minister added that combating corruption and promoting transparency and accountability is not just a slogan, but an approach and position that the government is working on with all care and credibility, and has been a top priority since he was assigned to head the government, considering it an important issue to restore the confidence of citizens and the regional and international community in the government.

He stressed that entering this battle is not for the sake of searching for quick, imaginary championships, and the matter is not only about advertisements, but the basis is to preserve the institutions and present complete cases that guarantee the accountability of those who commit corruption, and serve as a lesson to others so that the matter is not repeated.
