The World Health Organization announced that more than 36,000 cases of cholera, including 159 deaths, were recorded in areas under the control of the legitimate government in Yemen, during the first nine months of this year.
The organization said in a recent report on the spread of cholera worldwide that it recorded 36,404 cases of cholera in areas controlled by the legitimate government in Yemen, including 159 deaths, during the period from January 1 to September 29.
She added that during September alone, 2,706 cases of infection and 3 deaths were recorded in the same areas.
The UN statistics did not address the epidemiological situation in areas controlled by the Houthis, who are imposing a blackout on the epidemic and refusing to disclose its statistics, despite the widespread spread of the epidemic.
The latest statistics on the epidemic across the country were announced by the Acting Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Joyce Msuya, during a session of the UN Security Council in New York on Tuesday evening, where she indicated that more than 203,000 suspected cases of the disease have been reported since last March, adding that during the same period, “more than 720 people lost their lives due to cholera, and women and girls constitute 53% of the cases.”
The World Health Organization classifies the resurgence of cholera in Yemen and the rest of the world as a level 3 emergency.
