Every piece of Anduril technology is based on the LATIS system, which is essentially an AI brain that can take data from thousands of sensors—like radar—and respond to that data and communicate it to humans. The system might suggest sending a drone.

However, Loki believes that the emergence of artificial intelligence has opened Pandora's box that holds all the evils of humanity: greed, vanity, slander, lies, envy, weakness, impudence and hope, as the ancient Greek myth says.

The newspaper quoted the young inventor as saying that people fear the existence of these types of autonomous weapons, but he tells them that "the most terrifying thing is having to fight World War III with stupid weapons."

According to the Times report, Andruil's internal slogan is "China 27," a reference to the year in which President Xi Jinping apparently wants to prepare his military to invade Taiwan, a conflict that would likely drag in the United States and its allies.

“Anything you work on has to be relevant to a potential great power conflict with China in 2027,” Luckey says. “The reason for that is that a lot of what we do is we’re trying to help the United States deter any conflict with Taiwan in particular.”

He adds that the LATIS system is so smart that it could have thousands of robotic submarines making decisions on their own in the ocean without having to go back to upload data or communicate with people.

He stressed that manned submarines would be used for only a few missions, such as inserting special forces into enemy territory or carrying nuclear weapons.

"Unmanned submarines are for warfare and manned submarines are for fun, at least in my world," he explained, noting that he has his own manned submarines to play with.

Luckey acknowledges that there are some similarities between what Anduril is doing with AI-powered autonomous weapons and Robert Oppenheimer's development of the atomic bomb during World War II, even though the entire US government was behind Oppenheimer's research efforts.

Perhaps what Loki fears most, according to the Times report, is not the exploitation of “bad guys,” but the fear that they will use modern genetic engineering to develop biological weapons.
