The American Center for Justice welcomed the Biden administration’s transfer of 11 Yemeni men from Guantanamo Bay to Oman, noting that it is an important step toward addressing the injustice of indefinite detention without charge, and revealed the names of those released.
The US Department of Defense announced on Monday that the United States had sent 11 Yemeni detainees from Guantanamo Bay to Oman in a major resettlement operation that would reduce the number of prisoners to just 15.
“Among the transferred individuals is Sharqawi al-Hajj, whose nearly 23-year detention included documented abuses and torture,” the American Center for Justice said in a statement, noting that the transfer “highlights the urgent need to end the inhumane practice of indefinite detention.”
While he hailed "this progress," he stressed that "the fact remains that six men remain without charge, and three of them have been acquitted and released."
