The Mokha Center for Studies warned of the dire consequences of the continued Israeli attacks on the Yemeni infrastructure, noting that these strikes threaten what remains of the Yemeni people’s capabilities and exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in the country.
In a " Political Alert " issued today under the title "The Need for International Intervention to Prevent Targeting Infrastructure in Yemen," the Center stressed that the attacks launched by Israel on vital sites in Sana'a, Hodeidah, Salif, and Ras Katheeb do not only target military targets, but also include civilian facilities, causing severe damage that deepens the suffering of Yemenis in an unprecedented manner.
The story began on November 15, 2024, when Houthi leader Abdulmalik al-Houthi announced targeting ships heading to Israel in response to the war in Gaza, which led to an escalation of tensions in the region. The Houthi group expanded its operations to include all ships, prompting the United States to form an international coalition to protect trade in the Red Sea.
While the Israeli army justifies the recent strikes by claiming that they target the Houthi group, the Mokha Center confirmed that the reality reflects a different picture, as airports, ports, and power stations were directly damaged, causing widespread destruction to the Yemeni infrastructure that is already suffering from long years of war.
The political alert indicated that Yemen has been suffering since 2014 from a gradual erosion of its national capabilities, as the war has destroyed hospitals, ports and airports, while power stations are facing continuous destruction, which has compounded the humanitarian crisis and exacerbated the economic situation.
International reports have estimated the Yemeni economy's losses at more than $200 billion since the beginning of the war. The center warned that the continuation of Israeli strikes will increase these losses and threaten to wipe out what remains of the infrastructure.
The center also explained that recent attacks, including targeting the Ras Katheeb station and fuel tanks at the port of Hodeidah in July 2024, caused losses exceeding $20 million, while the attacks that took place in December resulted in the destruction of Sana’a airport and power stations and civilian casualties.
The Mokha Center confirmed that Israel's targeting of vital facilities in Yemen appears to be deliberate, as the attacks include essential facilities that millions of Yemenis depend on to survive.
He called on the international community to take urgent action and pressure Israel to stop targeting the Yemeni infrastructure, noting that international silence could lead to total destruction and the collapse of what remains of Yemen's capabilities, which would turn the lives of millions into endless suffering.
The center concluded its statement by saying that Yemen needs urgent international intervention to ensure the protection of its vital facilities and prevent the worsening of the humanitarian disaster, warning that any delay could drag the country into an irreversible disaster.
