On Saturday, the National Committee for Investigating Allegations of Human Rights Violations discussed with the Commander of the Taiz Military Axis, Commander of the 145th Brigade, Major General Khaled Qasim Fadel, the latest human rights developments in the governorate and the activation of accountability mechanisms.
In the meeting, which was attended by a number of concerned parties from the military brigades affiliated with the axis, Judge Ishraq Al-Maqtari, a member of the National Committee, explained the goal of the Committee’s meetings with the military agencies, in which it is keen to follow up on the files of violations attributed to members of the army and investigate them.
Judge Al-Maqtari pointed out that the committee is reviewing the measures taken by the military authorities regarding these files, and the necessity for the Taiz axis and its brigades to commit to implementing accountability measures against its members who have been proven to have committed acts that violate rights and freedoms, and to provide the committee with any accountability measures taken against them within the framework of internal accountability and law enforcement functions.
For his part, Major General Khaled Fadel presented a review of the most important recent steps taken by the axis with regard to protecting civilians, especially with the return of military battles after the Houthi group’s attack, in addition to the campaigns of prosecution against individuals affiliated with the brigades who are accused of violating their duties and leading to infringement of human rights, in the field of cooperation with the judiciary and ensuring the achievement of justice.
Major General Fadel stressed the keenness of the Taiz Axis and its military brigades to combine in their missions the protection of Taiz from the Houthi attacks on the governorate and confronting the acts of violence committed against the residents and homes, and the commitment to protecting citizens in the liberated directorates and holding individuals belonging to the axis accountable for their violations.
During the meeting, (10) incidents of assault on property, harassment and restriction of freedom were discussed, which the committee is investigating and following up on, the latest of which was the extrajudicial killing of the victim, Saif Mahmoud Al-Sharaabi, in the Al-Masbah area, Cairo Governorate, last week, which received public attention.
The committee also visited the home of the victim, Saif Al-Sharaabi, and listened to the statements of the victim’s family and a number of eyewitnesses, in addition to inspecting the scene of the incident.
