The Trump administration is considering a new multi-tiered travel ban, including Yemen and 10 other countries whose citizens are barred from entering the United States.
The ban would be broader than the restrictions imposed during President Trump's first term, covering 43 countries. A draft circulating within the administration lists three tiers (red, orange, and yellow) of countries whose citizens could face restrictions on entering the United States, according to the New York Times.
Yemen is on a "red list" of 11 countries whose citizens are completely barred from entering the United States, according to the draft proposal and recommendations developed by diplomatic and security officials.
Officials explained that these countries are: Afghanistan, Bhutan, Cuba, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela, and Yemen.
The orange list, which includes strict visa restrictions, includes 10 countries, including Russia, Belarus, South Sudan, Eritrea, and Pakistan.
The proposal lists the following countries whose citizens may face restrictions on entry to the United States, and some countries may change in any final order: Turkmenistan, Haiti, Laos, Myanmar, Sierra Leone, Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cambodia, Cape Verde, Republic of the Congo, Chad, Dominica, Equatorial Guinea, Gambia, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritania, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, São Tomé and Príncipe, Vanuatu, and Zimbabwe.
Officials cautioned that the list was prepared by the State Department several weeks ago and was likely to be subject to changes by the time it reaches the White House, according to the New York Times. The draft is being reviewed by officials at embassies and regional bureaus at the State Department, as well as security experts from other departments and intelligence agencies.
