Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said he will not negotiate with his US counterpart Donald Trump while the latter issues threats, days after Trump said he sent a letter to Iran's highest authority urging Tehran to negotiate a nuclear agreement.
"I will not negotiate with you under threat," Pezeshkian was quoted as saying by state media on Tuesday, addressing Trump. "Do what you want."
"It is unacceptable for us that (the United States) issues orders and makes threats," Pezeshkian added. "I will not negotiate with you (Trump). Do whatever you want."
Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said on Saturday that Tehran would not negotiate under pressure from American "bullying," a day after Trump said he had sent a letter urging Iran to enter talks on a new nuclear deal.
Later, the White House renewed its threats to Tehran. White House National Security Council spokesman Brian Hughes said in a statement that dealing with Tehran would be "military or through a deal," a phrase Trump had previously used in an interview with Fox Business.
"We hope the Iranian regime will put its people and interests above terrorism," Hughes added.
Trump had previously expressed his willingness to reach an agreement with Tehran, but he reimposed the "maximum pressure" policy he implemented during his first term to isolate Iran from the global economy and reduce its oil exports to zero.
Meanwhile, Iranian television announced the launch of offensive naval maneuvers in the northern Indian Ocean between Iran, China, and Russia as part of the Maritime Security Belt 2025 maneuvers.
Iranian Navy Operations Officer Mostafa Taj al-Dini said this year's maneuvers stand out from previous ones, with the increased number of participating units and countries, as well as the prominent presence of air units.
The naval exercise will continue until next Thursday, with observers from Azerbaijan, South Africa, Oman, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Qatar, Iraq, the UAE, and Sri Lanka attending.
