The Islamic Republic has spent billions of dollars and sent thousands of military personnel and allied fighters to Syria after the 2011 Arab Spring uprising to prop up the regime of Bashar al-Assad. Syria has been Iran’s main ally in the Middle East and a vital land bridge to Hezbollah, the most powerful militia in what Tehran calls the “axis of resistance.”

The commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, Major General Hossein Salami, justified today, Thursday, the humiliating defeat suffered by his forces and the forces of the Assad regime in Syria, due to the failure of the Syrian regime forces to confront the opposition forces that took control of the entire country within days.

The Canadian government announced on Monday that it has designated the Houthi group in Yemen as a terrorist entity under the Criminal Code, noting that the Houthis meet the definition of a "terrorist group."
