What do parties celebrate on their founding anniversary?

Our Writers| 14 September, 2024 - 4:17 AM

Meanwhile, the Yemeni Congregation for Reform Party continues its joyful celebrations of the 34th anniversary of its founding (September 13, 1990).

- And just a few weeks before that, the General People's Congress celebrated the 42nd anniversary of its founding (August 24, 1982).

With much love and loyalty, members and supporters of the two major parties in the country flooded various social media platforms with phrases, texts, pictures, designs and national chants, most of which were characterised by political propaganda, with everything that the two most powerful party propaganda machines in the country, which is still suffering under the yoke of the internal war, in its tenth year..!

The long years of establishment of both of them, being the source of these joyful celebrations; are basically a historical reflection of the impact of the two major parties on political life, whether in its emerging democracy on the Yemeni scene over a quarter of a century (1990-2015), or in its internal war that has been cut out of its last ten years (2014-2024)..!

And since the quarter-century period of (emerging) democratic political action is what is supposed to constitute the positive part of the act of celebration and joy - even though it has led to a bleak end; the decade of the last war, with its bloodiness, is supposed to transform every (party) celebration in this aspect into a mere old personal photo (selfie), devoid of the details of the destroyed homeland in which we live..!

So why are the two major parties celebrating today, after they have let the homeland of politics slip from their grip, before they later failed to manage the war to liberate it from the grip of the ferocious criminals?! While there is no one more capable than them to do that, if they only united to do it..!!

And here we are; in less than two weeks, the 62nd anniversary of the pioneering September Revolution will be upon us, followed by a short distance (only three weeks) the 56th anniversary of the glorious October Revolution. Which makes us wonder: Is it possible to make these national celebrations of ours more than just a monotonous annual commemoration, towards drawing inspiration from the paths of salvation and liberation?!

Celebrating the anniversary of the founding of parties, in the midst of this successively colorful war, may place them outside the framework of the national political action required of them, unless they seek to impose their presence in the public scene, which is governed by external forces that are more influential and effective than internal forces.

Our celebration of the revolution anniversary in the same way that is repeated every year, limited to the ecstasy of publishing and commenting on social media platforms, will not make any difference to what those parties do in their founding celebrations, unless we seek to try to find/impose/ways of national salvation in the context of the same general scene, floating on all the details..!

In order to make a difference in celebrating the anniversary of our reference revolutions this year, we must be careful in our discussions to force our national party forces to unite, considering that this is the only way to be saved from our brutal internal enemy, after regaining our sovereign decisions from the external guardian, as the free men of the glorious September and October revolutions did, respectively.

It is a leap decade, and it is time for us to shout today at the top of our voices: “Enough. We are tired of all this nonsense,” and this war must stop at the limits of this fluid decade.

And when it all works out, it would be nice for the parties to celebrate their founding anniversary. But not before there is a homeland to celebrate its return first and foremost.
