Syria and Lebanon agree to ceasefire on border after deadly clashes

The Syrian Ministry of Defense says it aims to expel Hezbollah from the Syrian villages it seized before and during the 2013 Qusayr battles, which the group uses as temporary sites for smuggling and trade operations, according to the Defense Ministry.
This comes a day after tensions escalated between the two sides. On Sunday evening, the Syrian Ministry of Defense accused Hezbollah of kidnapping and killing three of its members, stressing that it "will take all necessary measures after this dangerous escalation." Meanwhile, the Lebanese government says the dead were smugglers, not Syrian army personnel.
The border strip between Syria and Lebanon has witnessed a widespread deployment of both the Syrian and Lebanese armies in an attempt to curb smuggling and secure the border. Meanwhile, Syrian authorities are seeking to close illegal crossings previously used for the transport of weapons and drugs.
