The United States announced on Tuesday that there is "no official change" in its policy towards the components of the armed Syrian opposition that overthrew ousted President Bashar al-Assad, and that it will wait until it knows what the opposition will do before making a decision regarding them.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stressed that Washington will recognize a future Syrian government when it is "credible, inclusive, and non-sectarian."

“This transition must lead to credible, inclusive, non-sectarian governance that meets international standards of transparency and accountability, consistent with the principles of UN Security Council Resolution 2254,” Blinken said.

"The United States will fully recognize and support the future Syrian government that results from this process," he added.

Blinken also stressed that "all countries should pledge to support a comprehensive and transparent process in Syria and refrain from interfering in its affairs."

This comes as a US official revealed that President Joe Biden and his partners in the Group of Seven will discuss the unrest in Syria in a virtual meeting on Friday.

The Biden administration, along with governments in the region and the West, is struggling to find ways to deal with the Syrian opposition that has taken power in Damascus.

For his part, White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby said that the United States has communicated with various components of the Syrian opposition and wants to respond to the aspirations of the Syrian people.
