King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center announced the signing of a joint cooperation agreement with the United Nations Development Program to secure the needs of the Yemeni Ministry of Water and Environment for equipment and devices to contain the fuel and fertilizer leakage resulting from the sinking of the ship "Robimar" in the Red Sea, benefiting 126,020 individuals.
The agreement was signed by the Assistant Supervisor General of the Center for Operations and Programs, Eng. Ahmed bin Ali Al-Baiz, and the Under-Secretary-General and Assistant Administrator of the United Nations Development Program, Haoliang Xu.
The centre said that under the agreement, the national capacity will be developed to deploy a stockpile of oil spill response equipment, release of hazardous and harmful materials, and associated personal protective equipment.
Under the agreement, specialized equipment will be purchased to respond to oil spills to protect and clean up environmentally sensitive areas, and a remotely operated underwater vehicle capable of diving to a depth of 200 meters will be purchased.
The agreement also includes the provision of an international and a local consultant with experience to provide continuous technical support within Yemen for one year, and to enable organized inspections of the hull of the ship "Robimar".
In February 2024, the ship "Robimar" was attacked by the terrorist Houthi militia, which led to its sinking, carrying a large cargo of ammonia, oils and hazardous materials.
