A Pakistani man killed the administrator of a WhatsApp group of their neighbors because he had deleted him, police said in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, an area known for its tribal “honor codes” and large stockpiles of weapons.

The victim's brother, Mushtaq Ahmed, confirmed that the latter had deleted the number of the man named Ashfaq, the alleged perpetrator, from the WhatsApp group after a quarrel between them, according to a report seen by Agence France-Presse.

The two men had agreed to hold a reconciliation meeting, but when they arrived surrounded by relatives, including Mushtaq Ahmed's brother, Ashfaq opened fire "in response to being removed from the group," according to police officer Noor Wali. Ashfaq was arrested and charged with murder.

In Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, land disputes, commercial rivalries, and disputes in the name of a man's or woman's "honor" are often settled with firearms, or even heavy weapons, with neither the state nor the provincial government able to stop the violence.
