Climate change and its impact on agriculture in Abyan
A recent study revealed the negative impacts of climate change and armed conflict on the agricultural sector in Abyan Governorate, noting that the crop area declined by 38% from 2010 to 2022, which exacerbated the food security crisis in the governorate.
The study, published by the Mokha Center for Studies, explained that the armed conflict witnessed by the governorate had a significant impact on agricultural production, with widespread destruction of agricultural infrastructure and a decline in animal production, which increased the suffering of the local population.
The study also showed the importance of valleys and water resources in feeding the agricultural sector in Abyan, noting that climate change has caused a decrease in the rate of water discharge in the valleys, which has negatively affected agricultural crops.
In the marine fishing sector, the study indicated that this sector, which is a major source of income for the population, was also affected by the deterioration of general conditions in the governorate.
The study recommended the need to improve water resource management in the governorate, support farmers to enhance crop productivity, and enhance the competitiveness of local agricultural products in light of climate change. It also called for the development of sustainable development programs to improve the economic and living conditions of local residents.
The study stressed the need for urgent action by the concerned authorities to address the challenges facing the agricultural sector in Abyan, and to ensure the continuity of this vital sector in supporting the local economy and achieving food security.
