The movement said in its statement that Ismail Haniyeh "is not only the deceased of Hamas, but he is the deceased of the Palestinian people, the Arab and Islamic nation, and the free and honorable people of the world, and perhaps this broad interaction and solidarity in the east and west of the earth is a clear indication of that."
On May 6, 2017, Haniyeh was elected as the new head of the political bureau of the Hamas movement, and he resided in the Qatari capital, Doha, due to the ease of his communication with abroad from there, as he was still on Tel Aviv’s wanted list for the purpose of liquidation.
