Saleh Al-Faqir, Imam of the mosque in the village of Warqa in the district of Maifa'a Ans
The terrorist Houthi militia in Dhamar Governorate prevented residents of a village from performing Tarawih prayers in their village mosque and arrested the imam and preacher of the mosque.
The Equality for Rights and Freedoms Organization said in a statement published by the Yemeni News Agency (Saba) early this morning, "It received a report from the residents of the village of Waraqa in the Mayfa'ah Ans district (east of Dhamar city) stating that the militias had arrested the imam and preacher of the village mosque, Sheikh Saleh Al-Faqir, since last Monday, and prevented him from performing Tarawih prayers in the mosque."
The organization confirmed that this violation is the latest in a long line of abuses perpetrated by the militias in Dhamar Governorate. Since seizing control of the governorate, the militias have imposed strict restrictions on the Tarawih prayers, banning them from most mosques and arresting dozens of imams for conducting them.
The organization expressed its strong condemnation of these systematic repressive practices against religious freedoms, which constitute a flagrant violation of the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Yemeni constitution and international conventions. It warned against the militias' efforts to impose their false beliefs and sectarian agenda on society by force, and to confiscate Yemenis' right to freedom of worship.
The organization called on the militia leaders in Dhamar to immediately release Sheikh Al-Faqir and all detained imams, and to halt their repressive practices. It held them fully responsible for the continued systematic attacks on religious freedoms in the governorate.
In concluding its statement, the organization called on the United Nations and international human rights organizations to condemn these violations and pressure the Houthi militias to halt their ongoing violations against freedom of worship in Yemen.
