Taiz: Yemen Youth Net
Local authorities in Jabal Habashi District, west of Taiz (southwest of Yemen), announced that 5,000 families were affected by the floods that swept through the district last Thursday evening.
The authorities explained in a statement seen by Yemen Youth Net that the torrential floods that swept through most areas of the directorate caused significant material damage to public and private property.
The statement added that the torrential floods led to the demolition of dozens of popular homes and partially damaged a number of others.
He stated that the floods swept away dozens of agricultural lands that were about to be harvested, and which support more than 5,000 families, and today they own nothing, as they were the most prominent activity that those families depended on.
The floods also caused a near-total closure of the main roads connected to the governorate center, in addition to a complete closure of the secondary roads in the villages of the directorate, and caused significant damage to educational and health facilities and water facilities, leaving behind a humanitarian tragedy, according to the statement.
The statement called on the governorate authorities and humanitarian and relief organizations to intervene urgently and provide assistance to the affected and afflicted, open and repair roads, maintain vital projects and basic services in the fields of education, health and water, and take urgent measures to preserve the remaining agricultural lands.
Since the beginning of last August, the rate of rainfall in Yemen has increased, leading to the death and injury of hundreds, damage to thousands of homes and shelters for the displaced, and widespread destruction of infrastructure.
