On Sunday, members of the teaching staff at Taiz University appealed to the state leadership to intervene to save them from attempts by what they described as “land thieves” to seize their lands.
This came in a statement issued by the Residential Faculty Association, addressed to the President and members of the Presidential Leadership Council and the heads of the House of Representatives, Shura Council and Ministers.
The statement said, "We, the 120 faculty members of Taiz University, submit this urgent appeal to your esteemed position, asking you to intervene immediately to protect us and enable us to have the land that we purchased with our own money more than twenty years ago."
He added: "We were surprised by the attempts of some aggressors and land thieves to seize our land in the absence of appropriate deterrence from the local authority, which threatens our acquired rights and our dignity as educators of generations and servants of the homeland."
He continued: “We appeal to you, as the highest authority in the country, to issue your urgent directives to the local authority to carry out its duty in arresting the aggressors, deterring them from their illegal attempts, and ensuring that the faculty members are enabled to use their land, which is their legal and legitimate right.”
The statement stressed that "this land is not just a place, but rather a symbol of our social and material stability, after years of effort and giving in the service of education and building generations."
The members of the association concluded their statement by addressing the state leadership: “Therefore, we appeal to you with all respect and hope that you will support us in this case, which represents the protection of truth and justice, and the strengthening of the state’s prestige in the face of those who attack citizens’ rights.”
