The World Health Organization announced, on Monday, that more than one million suspected cases of malaria have been detected in Yemen since the beginning of this year, 2024.

According to the German News Agency (DPA), a copy of which states that “the deterioration of sanitation services in Yemen has led to an increased risk of waterborne diseases, as stagnant water resulting from floods has created breeding grounds for mosquitoes, increasing the risk of the spread of malaria and dengue fever.”

The organization revealed that since the beginning of 2024, Yemen has reported 1,051,287 suspected cases of malaria, and 13,739 suspected cases of dengue fever.

The organization pointed out that climatic, geographical, social and economic factors made the western coastal areas particularly vulnerable, and recent weather fluctuations, including rains, contributed to the spread of vector-borne diseases, putting vulnerable communities at risk.

She pointed out that with the support of the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection Office, the World Health Organization cooperated with the Ministry of Public Health and Population in Yemen to conduct a larval spraying campaign during the period from 19 to 24 September 2024.

Last October, the health authorities in Taiz announced that more than 4,300 cases of malaria had been recorded since the beginning of this year, 2024.
