The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) confirmed that more than 2,400 schools have been damaged as a result of the ongoing conflict in Yemen.

"The conflict and the collapse of education systems have had a profound impact on the educational environment for children in Yemen," she said in a statement on Sunday.

“Across the country, 2,426 schools have been partially or completely damaged or rendered unusable,” she added.

“Children bear the brunt of limited educational opportunities and the destruction of school facilities during long years of conflict,” she continued.

She pointed out that one in four school-age students does not attend school, and those who can go to school have to deal with ill-equipped facilities and overburdened teachers, who often do not receive their salaries regularly.

UNICEF noted that this year it is supporting the rehabilitation and construction of 891 schools in Yemen, and is providing incentives to more than 39,000 teachers to continue providing quality education.
