The United States of America reiterated that it is continuing to take tangible steps to eliminate the capabilities of the Houthis and deprive them of any support that the Iranian regime may send them.
This came in a speech by the Acting Permanent Representative of the United States to the international organization, Dorothy Shea, before the Security Council meeting on Yemen, on Thursday, according to the website of the US Mission to the United Nations.
“In line with President Trump’s executive order redesignating the Houthis as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, the United States is taking concrete steps to eliminate Houthi capabilities, and has designated the Houthis as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, which was announced this week,” Shea said. “The United States is also using targeted sanctions to deny the Houthis illicit revenue.”
She added that these sanctions preserve space for legitimate activities that support Yemenis living in Houthi-controlled territory who bear no responsibility for their malign actions.
The US diplomat stressed that her country "will take steps to stop Iran's support for Houthi terrorism, in accordance with the presidential national security memorandum issued by President Trump, which imposes maximum pressure on Iran."
Shea called on the UN Security Council to take a firm and clear position on Iran's flagrant violations of the Council's resolutions by continuing to arm the Houthis, and that "every UN member state must bear responsibility by fulfilling its obligations to ban the supply of weapons, military materials and technologies, related training, or financial funding to the group."
Shea renewed her country's call for the Security Council to take practical steps to enhance the role of the United Nations Verification and Inspection Mechanism ( UNVIM ), and called on member states to increase the funding required for the UN mechanism and provide it with the vital infrastructure necessary to increase its capacity to inspect 100% of covered containers arriving at ports under Houthi control in western Yemen.
She stated that the Houthis continue their attempts to hold Bab al-Mandab and global trade hostage. They have shown no willingness or ability to differentiate between their goals. She pointed out that their actions have done nothing for the Palestinian people, but have only put the lives of innocents at risk and brought more suffering to the Yemenis.
She pointed out that the United States "will take action against the Houthis if they resume their reckless attacks in the Red Sea and surrounding waterways and on Israel."
