The Yemeni Shura Council on Tuesday condemned the sanctions imposed by the US Treasury Department on Member of Parliament and businessman Sheikh Hamid Al-Ahmar and a number of his companies, calling on the Yemeni government to follow up on the issue diplomatically to review the decision.
The Shura Council Presidency said in a statement: “In an unprecedented move, the US Treasury issued punitive measures on October 7 against the Yemeni parliament member, member of the Consultation and Reconciliation Commission, and well-known social figure, Sheikh Hamid bin Abdullah Al-Ahmar, on allegations related to the Palestinian cause, which Sheikh Hamid categorically denies.”
The statement added that the whole world realizes that the Palestinian cause is a just cause, and that the genocide and gross injustice to which the Palestinian people have been subjected for more than seven decades is not approved by international conventions and the human values to which the free world adheres. It is a cause that finds broad, if not total, human sympathy from the peoples and countries of the world.
He stressed that the Palestinians have the right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, and that peace in the region will not be achieved before the Palestinian issue finds its way to a just solution.
The statement continued: "From this standpoint, the Yemeni Shura Council calls on the US Treasury to reconsider its decision regarding Sheikh Hamid al-Ahmar and his economic institutions included in the decision, as the decision does not appear objective."
He also called on the Yemeni government to follow up on the issue through official diplomatic channels, with American friends, to review the decision in light of its circumstances, which are not acceptable to our Yemeni people, who stand wholeheartedly with the Palestinian people in their just struggle for their legitimate rights.
Last week, the US Treasury placed Sheikh Al-Ahmar and nine of his companies on the sanctions list, in a decision that also included three Arab traders, on the pretext of supporting and financing the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas.
