Ahmed al-Shara, the commander-in-chief of the new Syrian administration, announced that he had invited the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad, to visit Syria. After meeting with the Qatari delegation, headed by Qatari Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Mohammed al-Khulaifi, al-Shara praised Doha’s stances and said that Qatar had remained steadfast in its position at all stages alongside the Syrian people.

Al-Sharaa stressed that "Damascus will begin broad strategic cooperation with Qatar in the coming period." He added that relations between Doha and Damascus will return to being better than they were before.

He explained that the participation of the State of Qatar in the next stage will be effective and important, and Doha will have a special priority in Syria due to its honorable positions towards the Syrian people, adding: "We seek to benefit from Qatari expertise in all fields."

Al-Khalifi: We held in-depth consultations on the future of Syria

For his part, Qatari Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Mohammed Al-Khulaifi said that the meeting with Al-Shara discussed the transitional phase, and stressed Qatar's firm position in standing by Syria and its people. Al-Khulaifi also stressed that the Syrian people are masters of their own decisions and will not be subject to guardianship from anyone.

Al-Khalifi also told the Qatar News Agency that he had held in-depth consultations with Al-Sharaa on the future of Syria, noting that he had confirmed to the commander-in-chief of the new administration in Syria the State of Qatar’s full readiness to provide support in various fields, in a way that serves the interests of the brotherly Syrian people.

Al-Khalifi pointed out that the visit of the Qatari delegation to Damascus at this time "embodies the firm and steadfast position of the State of Qatar towards the brotherly Syrian people, and confirms its absolute commitment to supporting all peaceful efforts to achieve stability in the sisterly Syrian Arab Republic, and its full readiness to contribute effectively and constructively to supporting the aspirations of the Syrian people towards a stable, secure and prosperous future."

Qatar officially reopened its embassy in Syria on Saturday after 13 years of closure, at a time when regional and Western countries are sending representatives to Damascus to meet with the new authority after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad. Qatar is the second country to officially reopen its embassy in the Syrian capital, after Turkey, since the overthrow of the Assad regime on December 8.

Damascus witnessed active diplomatic activity during the past two days, with the visit of several foreign and Arab delegations and their meeting with Al-Shara, most notably the foreign ministers of Jordan and Turkey.
