For his part, the UN Special Representative to Syria, Geir Pedersen, said that Israel's occupation of the buffer zone in the Golan Heights after the fall of the Baath regime in Syria is a violation of the separation of forces agreement signed between the two parties in 1974.
Asked by Anadolu Agency whether he saw Israel's actions in the buffer zone in the Syrian Golan as in violation of international law and whether they would demand it to back down, Pedersen said: "The message coming from New York (UN headquarters) is the same. What we see is a violation of the separation of forces agreement signed between Israel and Syria in 1974."
He pointed out that he will follow this issue closely with his colleagues in New York, noting that no one expected the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria within such a short time, stressing that what happened constitutes a turning point in the country's history.
"Syria is at a turning point right now, facing great opportunities but also great risks. We really need to look at both of those things," he added.
Pedersen described the Israeli attacks in Syria as a "worrying development," adding: "We continue to see Israel's practices and bombing of Syrian territory, this must stop."
Israel exploited the Syrian opposition factions' overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's regime to expand its occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights by occupying the buffer zone on the border.
Through its Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel announced the "collapse" of the 1974 disengagement agreement, on the basis of which this area was established.
On Monday evening, an Israeli security source said that Tel Aviv had attacked more than 250 targets inside Syrian territory since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime, including military bases, fighter jets, and missile systems.
On the dawn of December 8, the Syrian opposition factions entered the capital, Damascus, and took control of it, with the withdrawal of regime forces from public institutions and streets, thus ending a 61-year era of bloody Baath Party rule and 53 years of rule by the Assad family.
