Syrians across the country performed the first Eid al-Fitr prayers this morning, Monday, since the fall of the regime of ousted President Bashar al-Assad at the end of last year.
For the first time, Eid prayers were performed in the Unknown Soldier Square on Mount Qasioun, north of Damascus, with thousands of men and women participating.

Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara, Foreign Minister Asaad al-Sheibani, Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra, other ministers, Syria's Grand Mufti Sheikh Osama al-Rifai, and a number of Defense Ministry officers performed Eid al-Fitr prayers at the prayer hall of the Presidential People's Palace in Damascus.
In a speech following the prayers, Al-Sharaa said, "Syria has a long and arduous road ahead of it, but it possesses all the elements for construction at all levels."
Al-Sharaa added that he rejected the quota system in forming the new government because political division would disrupt its work. He called on Syrians to reach consensus because not all steps would satisfy everyone, he said.

On December 8, Syrian factions took control of Damascus, days after seizing control of other cities, ending 61 years of Baath Party rule and 53 years of Assad family rule.
On January 29, 2025, the Syrian government declared Sharaa president during the transitional period, abolished the constitution, dissolved armed factions and security agencies affiliated with the regime, the People's Assembly (parliament), and the Ba'ath Party.
On March 13, Shara signed a constitutional declaration specifying a five-year transitional period in the country.
