US President Donald Trump renewed his statements calling for the displacement of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip on Thursday, saying that “Egypt and Jordan should accept them.” At the same time, Egyptian calls were made for a popular mobilization on Friday to reject the displacement.
This came during Trump's response to questions from reporters at the White House about current issues. In response to a question about the possibility of Egypt and Jordan accepting Palestinians from Gaza, Trump said: "They will do it," as he put it.
The US President added: "We have given them (Egypt and Jordan) a lot, and they will do so."
Egypt: Popular gathering in front of Rafah crossing
In the same context, the head of an Egyptian party and an influencer on social media announced, on Thursday evening, a “popular gathering” on Friday in front of the Rafah border crossing with the Gaza Strip, to express rejection of the displacement of Palestinians.
The head of the Egyptian Social Democratic Party, Farid Zahran, said, “All procedures related to the travel of the popular delegation to the Rafah crossing on the Egyptian-Palestinian border have been completed, to express our full solidarity with the Palestinian people, and our rejection of attempts at forced displacement.”
Zahran, a former presidential candidate, explained in a statement carried by the party via its verified Facebook account, that “the popular delegation will move there at dawn on Friday.”
Zahran had previously issued an “appeal calling on popular forces, political parties, professional unions, and all segments of the Egyptian people to join a popular delegation on Friday to head to the Rafah crossing in solidarity with the Palestinian people and to reject attempts to displace Palestinians or undermine their legitimate rights,” according to the same statement.
