Taiz Governorate, in the southwest of the country, has recorded more than 4,300 cases of malaria since the beginning of this year, with rural areas at the forefront of this tragedy witnessed by the governorate.
The media official at the Ministry of Health office in the governorate, Taisir Al-Samai, said in press statements that the number of malaria cases in Taiz governorate has reached 4,338 since the beginning of 2024, without any deaths related to the disease being recorded.
He added that the Mawza'a Directorate, located in the west of the governorate, recorded the highest percentage of people infected with the disease with 1,157 infected, followed by the Mokha Directorate with 867 infected, and the Maqbanah Directorate came in third place with 689 infected.
It is noteworthy that malaria is a parasitic disease transmitted by mosquitoes in swamps and exposed and stagnant water, which causes serious complications that lead to death.
According to Al-Samai, malaria is one of the diseases that has been forgotten in Yemen, despite its seriousness, due to the focus on combating other diseases amid the complex reality in the country.
He called on donors and international organizations to intervene by supporting the National Center for Malaria Control, especially in rural areas where many diseases and extreme poverty are recorded.
Last Wednesday, Doctors Without Borders announced the registration of more than 2,500 cases of cholera, malaria and dengue fever in the Mawza district of Taiz governorate, during the first seven months of the current year 2024.
