A recent report issued by the World Food Programme ( WFP ) stated that 62% of Yemeni families are unable to meet their adequate food needs.
The program said in a report issued on Friday: "The prevalence of insufficient food consumption remains at alarming levels across Yemen, with 62% of households surveyed unable to meet their minimum food needs in February 2025."
The report added that the crisis was most acute in areas under the control of the recognized government, where data showed that 66% of families lacked access to adequate food, compared to 61% in areas under Houthi control.
The UN program explained that levels of severe food deprivation (poor food consumption) increased by 11% year-on-year, rising from 25% in February 2024 to 36% in February 2025, with the highest rate in government-controlled areas (38%) compared to 35% in Houthi-controlled areas.
He stated that all governorates exceeded the "very high" threshold of equal to or greater than 20% for malnutrition, with the exception of Sana'a. The peak was recorded in Al Bayda, Al Dhale'e, and Shabwa governorates.
The report indicated that the deteriorating food security is primarily linked to "high food prices in government-controlled areas, critical gaps in humanitarian aid due to a lack of funding in Houthi-controlled areas, the scarcity of income-generating activities, economic disruptions, and the effects of the lean season across the country."
The World Food Programme warned of a worsening food insecurity crisis in Houthi-controlled areas in the north of the country in the coming months as a result of the United States' redesignation of the group as a "foreign terrorist organization." The designation is likely to restrict commercial activity, increase food and fuel prices, escalate the conflict, and disrupt remittance flows, a vital source of income for many families.
