The World Health Organization announced that Yemen ranked third among the countries with the highest incidence of cholera and watery diarrhea during the month of January.
According to the international organization, Yemen ranked third in the list of countries with the highest number of cases recorded in January, with 6,110 cases, behind South Sudan, which topped the list with a total of 10,833 cases, and Afghanistan, which came in second place with 6,346 cases.
The organization recorded about 35,000 cases of cholera and acute watery diarrhea in 19 countries, including Yemen, Sudan and Somalia, while the number of deaths reached 349 during the month of January.
In terms of deaths, Yemen came in seventh place with four deaths, while Sudan came in third place with 46 deaths, behind South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which recorded 159 and 67 deaths, respectively.
Somalia tied for ninth place with Afghanistan and Uganda with one death. No deaths have been recorded in six of the 19 countries that have reported cases.
The organization said in late January that the cholera outbreak in Yemen had killed 879 people and infected more than 260,000 cases during the past year, representing 35 percent of the global cholera burden and 18 percent of the deaths reported globally.
