Yemen's Road War: Nearly 5,000 Traffic Accident Victims in Liberated Areas in 2024

The Yemeni Ministry of Interior announced that about five thousand people were killed and injured in traffic accidents in areas under the influence of the internationally recognized Yemeni government during the past year 2024.

The Director General of Traffic Police, Major General Omar Bamashmous, said in statements reported by the Security Media Center that 4,924 victims were killed or injured as a result of 4,764 traffic accidents that occurred in the governorates under the government’s jurisdiction during the period between January and December 2024.

Bamashmous added that traffic accident victims last year represent a 30% increase compared to the number recorded in 2023, as the number of deaths and injuries increased by 31% and 30% respectively compared to the previous year.

Bamashmous pointed out that traffic accidents claimed the lives of 663 people, while 4,261 others were injured with varying degrees of severity, including 1,532 whose injuries were described as "serious", while material losses amounted to 5,038,510,600 riyals.

Bamashmous explained that the traffic accidents that occurred last year, which he considered "a type of war", varied between 2,888 vehicle collisions, 1,033 pedestrian run-overs, 621 vehicle rollovers, 101 vehicle falls, 101 vehicle collisions with a fixed object, 9 vehicle accidents involving floods and damage, 6 vehicle fires, and 5 vehicle run-over accidents.

Marib topped the list of governorates in traffic accidents, with 1,704 accidents; representing 35% of the total accidents recorded in 2024, followed by Taiz Governorate (610 accidents) and 13%, then Lahj Governorate (443 accidents), and 9%.

The Director of Traffic Police noted that Marib also ranked first in the number of victims among the rest of the governorates, with 105 deaths and 724 injuries, followed by Taiz (104 deaths and 669 injuries), and in third place Lahj (91 deaths and 700 injuries).
