Chairman of the Munich Security Conference, Christoph Heusgen
Munich Security Conference Chairman Christoph Heusgen lost control of himself on Monday and tears welled up in his eyes as US Vice President J.D. Vance criticized Europe, in a tense scene that captured the world's attention.
During the closing remarks of the conference, Heusgen said: “Following the speech of US Vice President Vance on Friday, we must warn that the common base of principles is no longer common among Western countries.”
Heusgen then praised the European politicians who opposed Vance during the conference, emphasizing "established values."
While talking about these differences, he lost control of his feelings and started crying, and was unable to complete his speech, in a scene that caught the attention of those present.
A circulating video shows Christoph Heusgen, the chairman of the Munich Security Conference, crying emotionally during his closing speech. While social media users suggested that the reason was the frustration caused by US Vice President J.D. Vance, the conference's official Twitter account explained that the reason was that he was saying goodbye to his colleagues, so… pic.twitter.com/Cf1kFCZUyu

Vance's speech at the conference last Friday sparked angry reactions among participants because of his attack on Europe.
While J.D. Vance was expected to focus on Trump’s initiative on the conflict in Ukraine, Washington’s number two surprised the audience by devoting the bulk of his speech to criticizing European countries for what he considered a “regression in freedom of expression.”
“The threat that worries me most about Europe is not Russia, it’s not China, it’s not any other external actor,” Vance said at the Munich Security Conference. “What worries me is the threat from within. Europe retreating from some of its core values.”
"I fear that freedom of expression in Britain and across Europe is in decline," he added.
