More than 7 soldiers from the Southern Transitional Council forces were killed and injured today, Friday, in an armed attack in Abyan Governorate, southern Yemen.
Military sources said that gunmen believed to belong to the terrorist organization Al-Qaeda ambushed a military convoy in the "Amsara" area at the entrance to Wadi Omran in Mudiyah District, which led to the killing and wounding of more than seven members of the Transitional Council forces.
She explained that clashes broke out on Friday morning, when the attackers detonated an explosive device targeting one of the military armored vehicles belonging to the Transitional Forces.
Media outlets affiliated with the Transitional Council said that terrorist elements attacked a site of the Third Support and Reinforcement Brigade towards the Al-Furaidh area and the village of Sarrat Al-Mashaikh, noting that the brigade forces clashed with the terrorist enemy and inflicted heavy losses in lives, forcing them to flee.
Xinhua news agency quoted a military source in the Transitional Council forces as saying that Al-Qaeda elements ambushed military vehicles as they passed through Al-Furaidh area in Mudiyah district in Abyan governorate.
The source reported that Al-Qaeda elements planted explosive devices on the main road in the area to prevent supplies from reaching the military forces stationed in the Omran area, which is witnessing ongoing military operations against the organization in the Mudiyah district.
A local source said that the ambush targeted a military convoy of several vehicles in the Al-Furaidh area with medium and light weapons, coinciding with the detonation of an explosive device in one of the armored military vehicles.
The Al-Furaidh area, where today's ambush took place, witnessed a suicide attack with a car bomb last August on a military barracks, claimed by Al-Qaeda, which resulted in the killing of 16 soldiers and the injury of 18 others from the Southern Transitional Council forces.
