The Criminal Court in the interim capital, Aden, issued a verdict on Wednesday acquitting journalist Ahmed Maher of all charges against him, after spending about two and a half years in prison following his kidnapping by the Transitional Council forces.

The family of journalist Maher stated in a post on Facebook that “the Criminal Court in Aden Governorate completely acquitted him of the charges against him,” noting “his suffering during the long period of imprisonment.”

In contrast, informed sources revealed that the Criminal Prosecution filed an appeal against the appellate ruling, confirming that the case file will be referred to the Criminal Division of the Supreme Court for a final ruling.

Journalist Ahmed Maher was kidnapped in August 2022 by STC forces, where he was hidden for a period before appearing in a video under duress, in which he confessed to his involvement in assassinations, a move that sparked widespread condemnation.

After his kidnapping and obstruction of his trial sessions, the court had previously issued a four-year prison sentence against him, and the trial was described as lacking standards of justice.
