On Wednesday, professors and academics at five Yemeni universities organized protests to demand that the government improve their living conditions, pay all their overdue financial dues, and restructure salaries to be in hard currency before 2015.

The Syndicate of Faculty Members at the Universities of Aden, Lahj, Abyan and Shabwa organized a protest stand in front of the United Nations office in the parade square in Khormaksar District in Aden, while the Syndicate of Faculty Members at Taiz University organized a stand in front of the governorate building.

In Aden, union members raised slogans calling on the government to implement a package of demands that guarantee their rights and improve their deteriorating living conditions, most notably returning salaries to the first item and disbursing them regularly at the end of each month, with immediate disbursement of arrears.

The protesters also demanded a restructuring of salaries and restoring their value to the hard currency equivalent they were before 2015, finding urgent solutions to address the collapse of the currency and the deterioration of basic services, and obligating the government to fulfill its obligations towards faculty members and employees.

They stressed the need to guarantee the rights of faculty members and employees, including settlements and the rights of academic appointees and administrative contractors, in addition to disbursing lands for faculty and employees in the areas of Uzal and Amran, and protecting the university campus lands from encroachments.

Similarly, the statement of the stand-in organized by the Faculty Union at Taiz University demanded that salaries be paid regularly at the end of each month, with all arrears paid immediately, salaries be restructured and their value raised to the equivalent of their value in hard currency before 2014, and salaries arrears from 2017 be paid.

The statement called for disbursing the difference in the delayed annual bonuses for faculty members and their assistants at Taiz University, since 2012, and implementing urgent solutions to address the collapse of the currency and the deterioration of public services.

The protesters also called for settling the status of faculty members and their assistants at the university, including promotions and the rights of those appointed academically according to the law from before 2014 until today, in addition to obligating the government to provide health insurance for faculty members according to the law.

Following the protest, a delegation of protesters met with the Deputy Governor of Taiz, Rashad Al-Akhaly, where they demanded the dismissal of the university president, the payment of their financial dues, and putting an end to the influential people who seized the lands of the teaching staff.

Yesterday, Tuesday, the Syndicate of Faculty Members and their Assistants at Taiz University announced the day before yesterday the start of a comprehensive strike at the university starting from January 4, 2025, until the government responds to their demands.
