Experts have revealed that Russia is supporting the Houthi group in Yemen by supplying it with advanced weapons, such as laser-guided missiles and assault rifles, as part of a strategy aimed at pressuring the West and strengthening Russian influence in the region.
Experts confirmed in an analytical paper issued by the Mokha Center for Studies that this step comes within Moscow's attempts to transform the Red Sea into a strategic area of influence, which may threaten the security of international navigation and increase tensions in the region.
The paper indicated that relations between Russia and the Houthis have witnessed a remarkable development since 2015, with the escalation of the war in Yemen, as Moscow found in the group an ally to strengthen its presence in the region.
Analysts also warned that this alliance could lead to an escalation of the conflict between Saudi Arabia and Iran, which also supports the Houthis, which could exacerbate the situation in the region.
The paper added that this move reflects a major shift in Russian foreign policy, with warnings of serious security implications that could affect the stability of the Middle East and the security of vital waterways.
The paper also pointed out that any threat to the security of the Red Sea could negatively affect global trade, especially with the world's dependence on this passage to export oil and basic commodities.
This move would be an attempt by Russia to distract the West from the Ukrainian crisis, while using the Houthis as a pressure card against Saudi Arabia and its allies, further complicating the geopolitical landscape in the region.
