Taiz.. Journalists Syndicate organizes a workshop on occupational safety for workers in media institutions

A workshop organized by the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate in Taiz, on Thursday, recommended the necessity of integrating the concepts of occupational safety and digital security into the curricula of media departments in Yemeni universities.

This came during a workshop organised by the Syndicate in cooperation with the International Federation of Journalists and UNESCO, in the city of Taiz, on “Occupational Safety for Journalists”.

The workshop recommended the preparation of a special protocol for occupational safety that includes all press and media institutions, with the necessity of continuing to hold workshops on psychological support for journalists, providing occupational safety tools, and assessing the risk environment before and after press and media coverage.

The workshop also stressed the importance of forming psychological support groups for journalists in the field of occupational safety, preparing a technical team in the field of digital security, and providing technical and technological advice to journalists.

The workshop, which was held under the slogan: “Enhancing the professional safety of journalists in media institutions and outlets,” was attended by 20 leaders of media institutions and outlets in the governorates of Taiz, Aden and Hadramout.

During the workshop, three working papers were presented, discussing the reality of journalistic work in Yemen in light of the ongoing conflict.

The first paper, presented by Dr. Angela Sultan Al-Maamari, Assistant Professor of Mental Health and Head of the Psychology Department at Taiz University, spoke about “The Mental Health of Yemeni Journalists and Its Impact on Rights and Freedoms.”

The second paper, presented by researcher and journalist Ahmed Shawky, discussed enhancing professional safety procedures for journalists in media institutions, while Samira Abdel Latif spoke in the third paper about digital violence against female journalists in Yemen.
