A US military website revealed that the United States is using Super Hornet drones, which now carry glide bombs. These are the first time US Central Command has used them in combat missions against the Houthis in Yemen, as part of its ongoing campaign since mid-March.

According to the US military website War Zone - translated by Yemen Youth Net - US Super Hornet aircraft now carry Stormbreaker glide bombs, which are effective against surface targets, making them particularly important for the current campaign against the Houthis.

" We may have just obtained the first evidence of the use of the GBU-53/B StormBreaker glide bomb, also known as the Small Diameter Bomber II (SDB II), in combat," the report said, noting that it has not been used before by the US Department of Defense in any region of the world.

"The Army's first operational use of the Stormbreaker will be a significant milestone, as this weapon represents significant advances over its predecessor, the GBU-39/B SDB I, particularly in its ability to hit moving targets in all weather conditions," he continues.

U.S. Central Command recently released video footage showing ongoing missions against the Iranian-backed Houthi militia in Yemen, including footage of U.S. Navy F/A-18E/F Super Hornets carrying Stormbreaker missiles.

In addition to footage of weapons technicians preparing the aircraft carrier USS Harry Truman, President Donald Trump ordered large-scale military strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen earlier this month.

The first three days of these strikes reportedly killed "dozens" of Houthi militants and damaged headquarters, command and control centers, weapons manufacturing and storage facilities, and drone operations infrastructure, according to the US military website.

In addition to the Stormbreaker bombs,Known as precision-guided missiles, equipped with a multi-mode targeting system, they are designed for use against fixed and moving targets, ensuring high accuracy and effectiveness.

Other interesting weapons were also observed during these strikes, including several types of remotely piloted weapons, most notably the AGM-154 Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW) glide bomb, according to a US military website.

In addition to the AGM-84H/K Standoff Land Attack Missile-Expanded Response (SLAM-ER), the more common Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM), and the Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missile (AARGM).

As for the GBU-53/B bomb, its three-mode guidance system can detect targets using infrared or millimeter-wave radar, or use semi-active laser guidance to hit a specific target point.

Another key feature of the StormBreaker bomb is its ability to communicate with the aircraft carrying it. This means the weapon can be launched and redirected to a new target after launch, as needed, in addition to receiving periodic updates along its trajectory, according to the US military website.

Flexibility in hitting targets

Depending on the altitude of the launched aircraft, the weapon can also glide automatically using an inertial navigation system with the help of GPS, after which it can reach specific coordinates or start searching for a target.

The American website said, "This provides great flexibility, as the weapon can hit both fixed and moving targets, even at night or in bad weather conditions.

The report explains that this last point provides a significant advantage even over the "SDB Laser Missile," an evolution of the original SDB Laser Missile, which is capable of hitting moving targets, but not in all weather conditions. The SDB Laser Missile also requires the aircraft—or any other laser source—to be within line of sight to direct the laser beams at the target.

Stormbreaker missile

The US Air Force revealed that the StormBreaker missile, literally translated as "storm breaker," is capable of engaging fixed targets at a maximum range of 69 miles and moving targets at a range of 45 miles. This munition is particularly effective against surface targets, making it particularly relevant to the current Houthi campaign.

The StormBreaker is a remarkably small weapon, measuring just 69 inches long, with a diameter of just seven inches, and weighing 204 pounds. Consequently, a single aircraft can carry a large number of these weapons—up to 28 in the case of the F-15E Strike Eagle, for example—allowing it to pursue more targets.

According to the American website, "The F/A-18E/F has only been seen carrying the Stormbreaker on two smart carriers so far, as was evident on board the US aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman during Houthi attacks."

The American website concluded its report by stating that, at present, the original version of the StormBreaker bomb appears to have achieved a significant milestone in its long development history, and it is hoped that more details will soon emerge regarding the combat use of the GBU-53/B bomb in ongoing operations against the Houthi militia.
