Various parties are awaiting the response of the Lebanese Hezbollah to the settlement proposal with Israel, which was presented by Washington after weeks of discussions and leaks, and in light of the escalating confrontation between the two parties.
Al Jazeera quoted sources as saying that Hezbollah had been given a copy of the draft ceasefire proposal that US Ambassador Lisa Johnson had conveyed to Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, adding that Hezbollah would study the points contained in the draft and inform the Lebanese Parliament Speaker of its comments on it.
Meanwhile, the Israeli Broadcasting Corporation said on Friday that Israel is awaiting a Lebanese response to the American proposal for a ceasefire within a few days, and quoted an unnamed Israeli official as saying that Hezbollah will give an answer to the American outlines within a few days.
Draft agreement terms
The Israeli Broadcasting Authority revealed the terms of the proposed draft agreement between Lebanon and Israel, which include:
- Both parties acknowledge the importance of UN Resolution 1701.
- The draft agreement gives both parties the right to self-defense if necessary.
- The Lebanese Army is the only armed force in the south, along with UNIFIL.
- The Lebanese government will supervise any arms sales to or production within Lebanon.
- Israel must withdraw its forces from southern Lebanon within 7 days.
- The Lebanese army will replace the Israeli forces withdrawing from the south, and the withdrawal will be supervised by the United States and another country.
- Lebanon must disarm any unofficial military group in southern Lebanon within 60 days of signing the agreement.
The thorny knot
The Israeli Broadcasting Corporation said on Friday that Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer met with Trump and senior officials in his administration last Sunday and discussed with them a wide range of issues.
"For his part, Trump gave the official green light to continue trying to reach a settlement on Lebanon," she added. She quoted an Israeli source familiar with the conversation (who was not named) as saying that Trump told Dermer, "I want you to reach an agreement on Lebanon... I have no objections to the current plan."
After clashes with factions in Lebanon, including Hezbollah, which began after Israel launched a war of genocide on the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023, resulting in the martyrdom and injury of more than 146,000 Palestinians, Tel Aviv expanded the scope of the genocide since September 23 to include most areas of Lebanon, including the capital Beirut, through air strikes, and also began a ground invasion in the south.
The aggression on Lebanon resulted in a total of more than 3,000 dead and 14,000 wounded, including a large number of children and women, in addition to about 1.4 million displaced persons. Most of the victims and displaced persons were recorded after September 23.
