The Fishermen's Association of Sira Gulf in Aden Governorate (southern Yemen) revealed attempts to impose illegal levies by the authorities of the directorate in the governorate under the influence of the Transitional Council, starting the day after tomorrow, Wednesday.

The association said in a statement that the authorities of the Directorate of Seera are seeking to impose illegal levies under the name of "cleaning fees" amounting to 1% of the value of each fisherman's production.

She added that her attempts to communicate with the director of the directorate, Mahmoud bin Jarady, and raise their reservations about these taxes failed after he refused to discuss them.

The association pointed out that the director directed the Crater police to use force and collect taxes, which they said were in violation of the law, especially Article No. 2 of 2006 of the Law Regulating Fishing, Exploitation and Protection of Aquatic Life.

The association pointed out that they were summoned by the Crater Police and given a deadline ending tomorrow, Tuesday, to reach an agreement with the Cleanliness and Improvement Fund, otherwise force would be used to impose the deduction of those taxes.

While the Seera Fishermen's Association expressed its approval to reach a satisfactory settlement that includes all the governorate's fishermen, it disclaimed any responsibility for any repercussions that would result from the imposition of these taxes by force, holding the directorate's authorities fully responsible.
