A recent report revealed that about 113,000 cases of cholera were recorded in Yemen, the majority of which were in areas controlled by the terrorist Houthi militia.
The World Health Organization ( WHO ) and the Health Cluster said in a health bulletin issued on Sunday: “The cholera outbreak continues in Yemen, as a total of 112,583 suspected cases of the epidemic have been reported in most governorates.”
The report added that most of the reported cases were in areas under Houthi control, with 92,918 suspected cases recorded, as of July 6.
He pointed out that the remaining percentage was recorded in the governorates under the control of the legitimate government, where “19,665 suspected cases of cholera were reported as of July 10.”
The bulletin confirmed that the Health Cluster continues to coordinate with the relevant authorities and humanitarian partners in order to respond quickly to the outbreak of the disease.
She pointed out that the main challenge facing the public health sector in Yemen is: Maintaining the performance of the health system, which has collapsed due to the ongoing war in the country.
For months, the country has been witnessing a new outbreak of cholera, most of it in Houthi-controlled areas, and UN estimates indicate that more than a quarter of a million cases of cholera may be recorded across the country by next September.
Cholera is an infectious disease caused by the waterborne bacteria Vibrio cholerae . It spreads rapidly through the population, primarily through the consumption of contaminated water or food. The disease manifests as uncontrollable diarrhea, which, if left untreated, can lead to severe dehydration or even death.
